GRAPHICS: A+ (10) With Resident Evil 2 still months away, Capcom needed to do something to fill the long wait. As a result, a special package containing 3 different versions of the first game came out, entitled Resident Evil: Director's Cut. This game includes the full original American version of Resident Evil, the full Japanese version, and the all-new "Arrange" version. The first two are exactly like the originals, while the third is practically a whole new game. Arrange has all new weapons, outfits, monsters, camera angles, entirely different item locations and new objectives. The graphics for all three of them are the same, except arrange has a number of new screens (or "camera" angles). Graphics are 2D, pre-rendered images for the backgrounds which serve as the environments for 3D polygonal characters and objects. The graphics are done so well, that they may fool you into thinking that they're real, especially since the 3D characters fit in so well and look realistic themselves. Explosions make great use of lighting effects and transparencies, making them (and the rest of the game) look very cinematic. This game has a lot of blood and gore, therefore, parents should take caution. Everything in this game has very graphic content, such as the cinematics that explain the story as you progress, or the killing of a monster. Overall, the graphics are flawless, and have remained that way since the first game came out.
SOUND/MUSIC: B (8.75) Let's start with the good points. The music in all the versions are pretty much the same, which is good. It's very cinematic and can be frightening at times, like a scary movie. The zombies' growls are decent -though they could've been made scarier. Animal sounds are excellent and must have been taken from real life. Footsteps sound differently depending on what you're walking on which is a plus, and explosions/gunshots are just as good as the graphics. Voice acting... laughable. Those of you expecting movie-quality acting will be horribly dissapointed, you simply can't take anything these characters say seriously, and that my friends, is the reason why the score is lower than it should be. I found myself roaring with laughter after just about every word the characters said -even if it was a sad scene! Whoever's responsible for doing this monstrosity of a translation should be (should've been, rather) fired immediately. The sad truth is that at times you can't tell if this is supposed to be a comedy or horror. GAMEPLAY: A (9.75) Unfortunately, the (only) problem with the gameplay is that the characters are controlled more like cars that people. I think the developers should have used a gameplay style more like that of Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy VII/VIII instead of a racing game. Controlling the characters can be extremely difficult, if you are surrounded by monsters and have to hold left or right on the pad for a longer than neccessary time in order to aim to the disired target and shoot (which is an overly long process itself, done by holding R1 and pressing action). This can make the game hard and, in the long run, frustrating. I didn't want to take too many points for just that, because the overall gameplay is excellent. Solving difficult puzzles and shooting a variety of monsters is always good, and you do get used to the odd controls.
FUN AND REPLAY VALUE: A+ (10) With three different versions of the hit game Resident Evil, you're likely to play RE: DC for a very long time. Each game represents a different challenge, and in some, challenges are added upon beating. The arrange version has all the features changed around and lots of new things added, so if you beat the first game or if you have a strategy guide for Resident Evil, you still have no knowledge in it. WORTH BUYING: YES Well, if you're a concerned parent, you should decide what's best. A good alternative would be the Tomb Raider series, which is more puzzle solving and less violence. If you have not played the first Resident Evil, I definitely recommend this game over it, because this is all that game was and more, and it will take you a long time to beat the three different versions. Even if you've played the first game to death, you've only played a third of what this game has to offer. With all the new features, you can't go wrong purcasing this game, or at least renting it. OVERALL: A (9.75) The game that has kept millions of gamers up at night, Resident Evil, is back. To order Resident Evil:
