Title: Heart Of Darkness

Genre: Platform Number of players: 1 Memory space: 1 block
Release date: 9/9/98 Publisher: Tantrum/Interplay Developer: Amazing Studios
Compatible peripherals: Standard controller

OVERVIEW:

This game is the result of 5 years work at Tantrum (a division of InterPlay) and Amazing Studios. This game is the equivelent of FF7 for its genre. The acient genre of Adventure Side-Scrollers is back in this awsome game. Heart Of Darkness is a phoenominal game. And expect no less out of it.

STORYLINE:

The hero is Andy. A 10 year old boy. When an ecclipse occurs and his dog Whiskey dissappears. Andy runs to his tree house and prepares his flight craftand "plasma gun" and heads off to a world where anything can happen. He is pitted against little shadow beasts and flying skeletons, and other assorted creatures. Amigo ,an orange flying "thing", comes to your side and enlists the help of other "Amigos" to defeat the forces of darkness. The main comic relief in this game is the villian side-kick, Vicious Servent. He doesn't have it upstairs, but he's a riot! While the stroy line is a little childish, it should not detract from the game.

"Andy runs to his tree house and prepares his flight craftand "plasma gun" and heads off to a world where anything can happen."

GRAPHICS:

Dear god! What a feat! Its all stunning. From gameplay to the awsome FMVs, the graphics actually make this game. Be ready for anything. The game contains over 30 minutes of FMV Cutscenes. Including a 3D cutscene after the credits. Don't worry. You get 3D glasses when you buy the game.

"Dear god! What a feat! Its all stunning."

SOUND:

Best I've heard since FF7. It also has two things FF7 doesn't have. First is Digital Speech, thats right folks. It talks. It all talks regardless. Wether a cutscene or just basic game play, it talks! Second, ever heard of the London Symphony Orhcestra? They played the music for Star Wars and other various movies. One of the best in the world! And they do all the music for this game! A few noises do get irritating, but it isn't too bad. But the music is perhaps the best in Video Game history. It really is!

PLAYABILITY:

It takes a little while, maybe 15 minutes TOPS, to get all the controls down. As the game advances, it gets harder (go figure). There are times when you're forced to solve puzzles. Some things are just insane. But the final area before the end, is the point where all your built skills come in handy. Be ready for anything, and master your controls is all I can say.

"There are times when you're forced to solve puzzles. Some things are just insane."

FUN/REPLAY VALUE:

Lots of it. The game is huge (2 CDs), and there's a lot to explore. The game has 3 difficulty levels. Each is severly harder than the other. There's nothing new, nor any new cutscenes. but it is fun to go back and play areas you liked, or think you need practice on. And re-earning cutscenes is always fun. But don't take my word for it... try it!

WORTH BUYING: YES

Like Adventure Side-Scrollers, get it! Its a perfect game to add to your collection. If you don't like the genre, try renting it first. Its worth at least $4 to give it spin.

OVERALL:
9.75

Great game! Not many can pull off a stunt like this, but it was finished, and to my knowledge, its the only game with a 3D cutscene. (as in stuff popping out of the screen.) A game that is king in its genre. Its nothing short of phoenominal! Look out SquareSoft... InterPlay is one step behind you!
