Games To Movies-
As long ago as the times of ancient Greece, people have enjoyed the
"theatrical arts." Today, these include stage, television, and cinema
(movies). Most of the stories behind stage and screen (and a few "made for tv"
movies) are based off classic and modern literature such as plays and books.
However, in the past 10 years, a new transaction has evolved. Three historic
video games have been transferred into live action, full length cinematic
features! Other games have been transferred into other forms of video, but
only 3 games have made it into movie theaters across America. These games are
Super Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter. All these movies had
something in common. They all SUCKED! (from a movie fanatics point of view)
Super Mario Bros. had barely ANYTHING in relation to the original storyline.
However, the official Nintendo magazine, Nintendo Power, told many video
gamers that the movie was about Mario and Luigi's first real adventures.
Fighting of the modern "human" ancestors of dinosaurs, lead by the evil dino
dictator, King Koopa. However, Princess Daisy contains a piece of the supposed
asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs (which actually sent them into a
parallel universe). Should this rock be reinserted into the asteroid, the
Human World, and the "Mushroom Kingdom" would be united. However, by sheer
human error a doorway was opened. Daisy who had lived in entire life in the
human world, was taken back to the mushroom kingdom. Her boyfriend Luigi
Mario, and his more famous brother Mario Mario follow Daisy and her captors
Iggy and Spike into the Mushroom Kingdom. While traces of our beloved Mario
Bros. games do exist, its not enough!
Mortal Kombat, for lack of better phrasing, followed the game story pretty
closely. All the memorable characters were there. The special effects were
anything but lacking. Just one visual orgy after another. Tons of violence
were accompanied by equivalent amounts of BAD ACTING! A little more of an
achievement the SMB movie, it was successful enough to spawn a sequel.
I never saw Street Fighter, so I won't bother talking about it. It got bad
reviews anyway. Besides, Bad Actor King, Jean Claude Van Damme was in it.
Nuff' said.
More commonly we've seen movies turned into video games. Which like its
inverse, has not heralded great results. However, the next the step from Video
Game to Screen is Square's Final Fantasy Movie. A total computer animated
movie due for release in the US by 2000, or 2001. Judging by how FFVII's FMVs
looked, and how good FFVIII's graphics and FMVs are looking, the FF Movie will
most likely knock the socks off Disney/Pixar's Toy Story, and A Bug's Life in
terms of visual appearance. But how will its story and characters be? Will the
new FF Movie suffer the fate of other Game-to-Movie attempts? Or will it be as
successful as its video game counter parts?
As we approach the new millennium, and as video games and movies get better,
perhaps we shall improvement on transaction between the two. Better "movie
games" and "video game movies" just maybe in our future. Who can truly say?
But as an avid gamer and movie goer, I hope so.
