Title: Final Fantasy VII

Genre: RPG Number of players: 1 Memory space: 1 block
Release date: 6/1/97 Publisher: Sony Developer: Square
Compatible peripherals: Standard controller

GRAPHICS: A+ (10)

The graphics in Final Fantasy VII are a huge leap over its predecessors, in fact, they are a huge leap over anything you've ever seen before. You'll be shocked by the way the FMV flawlessly joins the gameplay and at first, you may find yourself waiting for the actual gameplay to start not realizing that it already has. It uses an engine similar to that of the Resident Evil games, but it is nowhere near as clumsy. In Resident Evil 1 and 2, the backdrops where still images that never moved in conjunction with the characters, and the characters didn't move all that good either, as you had to press left or right to turn, which often took too long. In Final Fantasy VII, The characters look much less detailed, but are much smoother (they also look more anime-like), and the backgrounds can actually scroll, making it less movie-like, but much more realistic. The backgrounds themselves are incredibly detailed and are the some of the coolest you'll ever see, but the main draws of this game are the battle scenes. They must be seen to be believed. All the characters and enemies are fully polygonal 3D models and look fantastic, but no graphics in any game have ever looked as good as this game's monster summons. Each summon (of which there are about 30) makes great use Playstation's graphic abilities, they are all completely different and devastating, but graphically speaking they'll be unsurpassed until the sequel. Believe me, this game has the best graphics ever seen.

Limit breaks (like the Braver shown above) look truly amazing and are equally painful.

SOUND/MUSIC: A+ (10)

Usually in an RPG, you can expect to have an unbelievable soundtrack to match the game's storyline. In this Final Fantasy, while some of the tunes don't meet FFIII's high standards, overall, the music is quite awesome and fits in to the storyline at all times (it's also generally better than most other games). You may want to purchase the soundtrack, or at least download it from the net. The sound quality of this game is amazing. It features sounds for absolutely everything and they hardly ever repeat themselves like in other RPGs, you won't find a flaw in here.

GAMEPLAY: A+ (10)

Controlling your character is easy from the start, you have many options on how to configure your game, and the interface is simple for the exploration part. During battles however, the menus are more complex and require you to think fast and plan your attacks beforehand. The materia system can be quite confusing at first, but after a few hours and a few fights, you'll become accustomed to it and you'll win with much more ease. You normally don't have to use but one or two buttons at a time, just walk, talk, select, or cancel. This simple button layout is the typical RPG interface and you really don't need to expand on it.

This game's storyline and characters will hook you from the start. Expect the plot to have lots of twists.

FUN AND REPLAY VALUE: A (9.50)

This game is VERY long. You won't be able to finish the entire thing in less than 60 hours unless you use a strategy guide (they just spoil the game), so it will keep you playing for perhaps even months. The epic storyline will get you hooked from the start, and in my opinion, this is the best story in any game. You may even want to play it again to get all the things that you missed the first time, since you're not likely to get everything the first time through. I don't know if it has enough replay value to make you come back to play it over and over again though. An excellent experience with limited replay value, this game is more like an event.

WORTH BUYING: YES

If you're an RPG fan, you just can't do better than this, even with all those new RPGs coming out, it goes undefeated. If you're not a fan, and even if you hate RPGs don't reject it without trying it first, if it wasn't for this game, I would not be the RPG fan I am today, I even bought a Super Nintendo just to play the Final Fantasy games I missed! No matter what type of gamer you are, go out and buy this game right now if you don't already have it, because you are guaranteed to enjoy it.

OVERALL: A+ (10)

This game is perfect. It has made a new standard for all RPGs and games in general that follow it. It is perfect for all genders, so really no matter who you are, you can't go wrong with this jewel of a game.
