OVERVIEW: Fighting Force was developed by Eidos, and carries an ESRB rating of Teen. This game is reminiscent of a 2D side scrolling fighting game, but in 3D. Play it two players for good old fashioned, button mashing good time.
GRAPHICS: 7.1 Fighting Force has average graphics. The characters are 3D polygonal models, which, like the backgrounds and other graphics, are not detailed in the least. There are no FMVs. Instead, the movies are done using the in game graphics. This is a disappointing fact, because the graphics are none too impressive. The truth of it is that the movies don't really do anything, and chances are that you'll sit back and laugh at the pathetic attempts at "movies."
SOUND/MUSIC: 7.1 Fighting Force's attempts at music are laughable. They are at most adequate, but do not do the game justice. If you wish to get the most out of this game, you should get your stereo revved up and blast a good punk rock CD. Sound effects are not starling, in fact they're nothing out of the ordinary. A few grunts here and there, punching sounds, people falling down, these types of sounds are nothing to be missed. What you need is something to feed your destructive vibes, like punk rock. STORY: 0 An evil gang is attempting to take over the city, and it's your duty to save the city from their evil clutches. There are four characters: Smasher, Hawk, Mace, and Alana. This is the same story as every other game of the genre, except even more unoriginal. Story serves no purpose in Fighting Force, which is a good thing considering the slipshod manner in which it was pieced together. GAMEPLAY: 9.5 Perfectly implemented into Fighting Force, gameplay is one of two areas that makes this game worthwhile. Gameplay flaws are non existent in this game, however, the gameplay is not perfectly assembled, which is what retracts from the perfect score. The characters are all easy to control, although with the exception of Smasher, the characters are not much different from one another. Fighting Force is rendered in a restricted 3D, meaning that the areas are 3D, but there are boundaries. The game has a room to room feel. You walk into one room, kill all the enemies, then move to a new room to fight off more enemies. This restricted feel would hinder some games to an almost unplayable point, yet in this game, the restricted feel is what makes it good. The one weakness in gameplay is the deficiency of varied gameplay. The worlds don't change much, and the objective of beating all your opponents remains constant, giving way to repetitive gameplay. Other insignificant flaws include the non interactive backgrounds and lack of different special moves. These types of complaints are mere annoyances, they're inconsequential to the overall gameplay experience.
FUN/REPLAY VALUE: 8.1 Fighting Force's fun factor cannot receive enough praise. To be truly enjoyed, it must be played two player. Beating gangsters senseless has never been more fun than this. The first time you play it you'll laugh the entire time through. It'll be more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Replay value, on the other hand, is a sad extension of the fun factor. As I have already said, Fighting Force is one of the most fun games available for the Playstation, that is, the first time you play. It might be worth a second run through, but after twice through, you'll cringe even thinking of the game. CHALLENGE: 10 Challenge in this game is on the exact level it should be. For beginners, there is an easy setting to become familiar with the proper feel. On more difficult settings, a genuinely difficult game can be found. There is no learning curve, giving beginners a fair shot at the game, but for more experienced gamers who seek a tough time playing through the game, there is a hard setting. OVERALL: 7.1 A high degree of fun can be gotten out of this game, until you've beaten it. At that point, the game becomes worthless. WORTH BUYING: NO Unless you've never played a game of this type, don't buy it. Even if you've never experienced this genre, there are far better efforts on the NES, SNES, or Genesis. I would recommend Streets of Rage for Genesis if you want a button mashing side scrolling fighter. Don't pass this one up, though.
