Title: Driver

Genre: Racing Number of players: 1 Memory space: 1 block
Release date: 7/8/99 Publisher: GT Interactive Developer: Reflections
Compatible peripherals: Standard controller, Analog, Vibration function

The latest playstation title to fall into my collection was Driver. Driver is yet another rubber burning driving game to fall in the wake of Gran Turismo. Don't be deceived, this is no oval track Nascar race loaded with soda advertisements and checkered flags. This one has got that urban feel. Street driving as it should be.

In Driver your character proceeds through the missions as an undercover cop posing as a wheel man for a crime syndicate. Man are you ever expected to be able to drive!! The actual driving feel of this game isn't that realistic, but more like a cop show chase scene, think Bullit. If you can't keep your car (generally muscle like) at speed, you might as well go back to playing Minesweeper (ya the win 3.1version).

The creators of Driver have done a great job making the setting of the game consistent, but dynamic. Each city has its own map which you are free to navigate as you please. Take any route you want, just get there!! In addition, you as your character have the ability to select your missions from messages left on your answering machine. Ditch anything that sounds lame, and take the really exciting jobs. Finally the best attribute of the game is the variation in the missions. There are a whole whack of mission varieties: bank job getaways, deliveries, destruction derbies, et cetera. You won't get bored easily. On top of all this, Driver packs a heavy sound track. There might be one or two borderline tunes, but the rest pump the funk.

To be critical of Driver is not impossible. Firstly the game save screen is total garbage. The layout is as functional as my TRS-80!! Also, it is only one player (maybe that's a good thing). Don't worry about the drawbacks, they won't slow you down.

Make sure to try the mission with the restaurant pay back, and the one where you have to scare the witness. Watch out for roadblocks, vigilante cops, and try to keep a low profile while you can. I've got to hand it to these guys for a job well done. Driver scores big.

Overall rating: 8/10 with the music off!
